The LEAD Nelson program is a cohort-based, grow-your-own teacher initiative that provides students with a strong foundation in the fundamentals of teaching. High-quality, rigorous instruction is delivered through a structured curriculum that includes dual credit opportunities through WKU, preparing students academically for their future careers in education. As a cohort, students learn and grow together in a supportive environment that fosters collaboration, connection, and a shared commitment to becoming educators. Through embedded classroom experiences—such as observing and working alongside mentor teachers—students gain real-world insight into the teaching profession. Each participant is supported through personalized mentorship, coaching, and career guidance, all within a safe and caring learning environment.

The Education Core
Gain a head start with 12 college credit hours focused on essential education coursework. This is a great "fast-track" option for students looking to earn credits without committing to a full degree pathway.
Associate Degree Track
Work toward a full Associate in Science or Associate in Arts with a specialized emphasis on education. This comprehensive track allows students to complete their general education requirements and dive deep into teaching theory and practice.
Registered Apprenticeship
Secure a Registered Apprenticeship with Nelson County Schools. This allows you to "earn while you learn," receiving paid, on-the-job professional training while working directly within our school district.

*Sophomores: It's Not Too Late to Lead! Think you missed your chance to join Lead Nelson? Think again! We have a dedicated path specifically for incoming sophomores to jump right in as Year 1 Students. We will work with you to get you caught up and on track for college credits and classroom experience. You can even start working towards your associate's degree, there is still time! Your journey towards becoming an educator starts now!
