ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
ENGLISH I
This course emphasizes reading, speaking, listening, writing, research, and thinking skills with assignments designed to challenge each student at his or her level of ability. Literature studied at this level is organized thematically and selected to reflect America’s cultural diversity.

PRE-AP ENGLISH I
This course is designed for students who wish to develop the critical thinking, reading and writing skills required for success in college. The four areas of emphasis in this course are developing critical thinking and reading skills through an intensive reading program of novels, short stories, poetry, drama, and non-fiction; building competency in grammar; improving vocabulary knowledge; developing analytical, narrative, expository and imaginative writing skills. A summer reading assignment may be assigned after registration.
*This course may be taken in place of English I as the graduation requirement.

ENGLISH II

PRE-AP ENGLISH II
English II Pre AP builds on the reading, writing, listening, and thinking skills fostered in English I Pre AP through a study of literary genres that come predominantly from American literature, through a study of grammar and through class discussions, projects, presentations, independent reading, research and writing. Curriculum will also focus on preparing students for the End of Course Assessment (EOC) taken as the final exam.

ENGLISH III
This course emphasizes reading, speaking, listening, writing, research, and thinking skills with assignments designed to challenge each student at his or her level of ability. Literature studied at this level is organized thematically and selected to reflect America’s cultural diversity.

AP LANGUAGE & COMPOSITION
This course is designed to be a preparatory class for students intending to take the AP Language & Composition exam. College credit can be earned for an acceptable score on the AP Language and Composition test given through the College Board. Students cultivate their understanding of writing and rhetorical arguments through reading, analyzing, and writing texts as they explore topics like rhetorical situation, claims and evidence, reasoning and organization, and style.

AP LITERATURE
This course is designed to be a preparatory class for students intending to take the AP Literature & Composition exam. College credit can be earned for an acceptable score on the AP Literature and Composition test given through the College Board. Students cultivate their understanding of literature through reading and analyzing texts as they explore concepts like character, setting, structure, perspective, figurative language, and literary analysis in the context of literary works.

ENGLISH IV
This course emphasizes reading, speaking, listening, writing, research, and thinking skills with assignments designed to challenge each student at his or her level of ability. Literature studied at this level is organized thematically and selected to reflect America’s cultural diversity.

DUAL CREDIT ENGLISH 101, FALL SEMESTER
This course focuses on academic writing including drafting and revising essays. Instruction is focused on critical reading, logical thinking, analysis of texts, and correct grammar usage. Research and appropriate citation of sources is also covered. Notes: (a) credit not available by special examination; (b) English 101 and 102 may not be taken concurrently; ( c ) AP credit in the English Language and Composition category for ENG 101 awarded as indicated by AP scoring chart in current KCTCS catalog. DUAL CREDIT ENGLISH 102, SPRING SEMESTER
This course focuses on argumentative writing including further instruction in drafting and revising essays. Instruction is a continuation of skills covered in ENG 101 involving reading, writing, analysis, grammar, research, and source documentation. Note: Credit is not available by special examination. DUAL CREDIT ENGLISH 161, FALL/SPRING
