MARKETING AND HOSPITALITY & TOURISM
MARKETING PRINCIPLES
Marketing Principles teaches students how businesses attract customers, build brands, and increase sales. Students learn key marketing concepts like product design, pricing, promotion, and distribution while developing real-world skills in communication, customer service, and ethical decision-making. Using current technology and hands-on projects, students solve real business problems and build leadership skills through FBLA, preparing them for careers in marketing, business, and entrepreneurship.

SPORTS + EVENT MARKETING
Sports & Event Marketing focuses on how teams, leagues, and major events attract fans, sell tickets, and build powerful brands. Students analyze how organizations such as professional and collegiate sports teams, tournaments, and live events use promotions, social media, sponsorships, and pricing strategies to drive attendance and revenue. Through real-world scenarios, ethical decision-making, and hands-on projects, students explore careers in the sports and event industry while developing leadership skills through FBLA. If you are a student athlete, you'll want to take this course!
1 Credit, Grades 10-12 | Prerequisite: Marketing Principles
THE GENERAL STORE AT THOMAS NELSON
The General Store is a hands-on, school-based enterprise where students operate and manage a real retail business on campus. Students apply skills in merchandising, inventory management, pricing, marketing, customer service, and daily operations while making real business decisions that impact profit and performance. Through teamwork, problem-solving, and ethical decision-making, students gain authentic work experience and leadership skills while preparing for careers in retail, business management, and entrepreneurship through FBLA.
1 Credit, Grades 11-12 | Prerequisites: Must have completed two business courses. Application & interview required.
THE GENERAL STORE: STUDENT MANAGER
The General Store Student Manager role is an advanced leadership position within Thomas Nelson High School’s school-based enterprise. The student manager oversee daily store operations while leading and supporting store staff in a real retail environment. Responsibilities include supervising employees, managing inventory, assisting with pricing and promotions, supporting marketing efforts, monitoring sales performance, and modeling professional customer service and ethical leadership.
3 Credits, Grade 12 | Application Required: Students must have had four business courses (or enrolled in their fourth), submit an application, a resume, and two letters of recommendation to be considered.
We are excited to launch the Academy of Hospitality & Tourism at Thomas Nelson High School
The Academy of Hospitality and Tourism gives students hands-on experiences in hotels, travel, tourism, and event marketing while learning how these industries attract customers and deliver outstanding guest experiences. Students use industry-based curriculum to plan trips, design marketing campaigns, manage operations, and solve real-world business challenges, all while building professional and leadership skills. By the end of this course, students will earn two CTE elective credits and an industry-recognized certifications, giving them a strong advantage for college, internships, and careers in hospitality, tourism, and event management.
HOSPITALITY & TOURISM MANAGEMENT 1 & 2
Hospitality & Tourism Management is a dynamic, career-focused course designed to prepare students for success in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing industries. Using the American Lodging Educational Institute (AHLEI) Hospitality and Tourism Management curriculum, students gain a strong foundation in how hotels, restaurants, travel companies, and event venues operate in real-world settings. Throughout the course, students explore essential industry concepts such as exceptional customer service, daily operations, marketing and promotion, safety and risk management, quality control, and professionalism. Learning goes beyond the textbook through hands-on projects, interactive case studies, simulations, and industry-based scenarios that mirror real hospitality challenges and decision-making. Students also build critical employability skills - including leadership, teamwork, communication, and problem-solving while exploring high-demand careers in hotels and lodging, food and beverage management, tourism and travel services, and event and venue management. Leadership development and career exploration are enhanced through participation in FBLA.
Students who successfully complete this course will earn TWO CTE credits and the Hospitality and Tourism Specialist (HTS) nationally recognized industry certification, providing a strong advantage for college programs, technical training, and immediate entry into the hospitality and tourism workforce.

FBLA gives students real-world leadership experience, career exploration, and opportunities to compete, earn scholarships, and build resumes. Members gain confidence, professional skills, and connections with business leaders while standing out on college and job applications.
